I'm notorious for vanishing for long peroids of time and then not coming back. I don't know how regularly I'll be reading livejournal, but I'm really intent now on improving my artwork--and I'm going to leave behind as much of my old anime influence as possible--meaning that I'm heading more and more in the "realistic" direction (without being 100% realistic). In fact, I spent long hours yesterday drawing some original fanart. This my main character I play in Sryth. I did a (lazy) colored portrait version, as well as a sketch for something I hope to eventually have the skills to color to completion.

I drew some fan art for some of the people in FEP. Some are Fire Emblem characters, but it also includes characters from other fandoms.

I'll be putting up more when I get to them. ^^

I'm back from Taiwan. It was not relaxing AT ALL. We were on public transport about a quarter of time--it was either bus, train, MRT, MTR, light rail, or being stuff 4-in a row in the back seat of a taxi. In a way, I'm glad the "vacation" was over. Now, if I only I can have a REAL vacation. >__> I'll probably be going back to work on Jan. 3rd. One day to recover will be enough. I still need to put some final touches on my application, and then there's my letter of recommendation I need to start drafting out. *sighs*

Anyway, now to get some real shut-eye. I'll put up some pictures and videos later. I'll be having New Year's lunch later on today with my boyfriend's family.

It's been a bit crazy the last few days, and I have not had an opportunity to get online until now. This will be very brief. We spent 3 days in Hong Kong, and just got back to Taiwan just now. I'll be in Taiwan until the 31st. I took a bunch of pictures on my new camera, and will upload them when I get back. The quality is so beautiful!

Before I went to Taiwan, arckyosuke and I spent last weekend in Washington to visit some friends and to pick up our newest flock member, Kazuzu.

He's a beautiful cinnamon pied/pearl tiel. I hope he keeps his cute little pearl spots when he's older. I hope my boyfriend has been training him. He's such a sweetie, and I miss him already. It's been fun (and exhausting) so far. But a part of me wants to go back to California already.

Okay guys (and gals). I know LOLcats is a popular meme right now, but WHAT IS UP WITH

LONGCAT IS LOOOOOOOOOOONGCollapse )

Okay, I will stop breaking your page now.

Yesterday, arckyosuke and I saw the Golden Compass, and other than Nicole Kidman and awesome visuals, it was a bit of a let-down. :( For those of you have read the book by Phillip Pullman, you'll probably be disappointed by the ending. And there was no content in there that I thought was even religiously objectional.

OH OH OH. And we got RADIANT DAWN yesterday!! ♥ I only played the prologue, because I'm going to make sure I finish my personal history statement before playing anymore. But yes, I'm definitely excited! &hearts!

P.S. arckyosuke, stop spamming me with SPARTAAAAA memes! XD

Okay, somebody shoot me. I've been mesmerized by this video of Japanese singer SHOWTA, who's got to have the most seamlessly androgynous voice I've ever heard from a guy (who is almost 20 years old). He even sounds like a girl in his talking voice, but at least he can sing live.

So I couldn't resist getting the Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro. It was expensive, and two of my paychecks immediately disappeared, but it's a computer that works like a dream. I also installed Windows XP through Desktop Parallels. Today, I had open several Mac programs and also a few through XP, and it didn't slow down my machine at all. Now, I just have to figure out how to play Minesweeper on it. ^^

I'm so in love with my new computer!! ♥

arckyosuke and I were joking around about our "dream house" someday. It's going to have an autoclave instead of a dishwasher, and the bathroom will have a switch that flips on the laminor flow hood. There will also be a fume hood in the kitchen for cooking. XD

What's your dream house like?

Spoilers for Chapter 155: squees and rantCollapse )
Even if this is a fantasy world where all sorts of things can happen and people have magical powers, I believe that every individual is responsible solely for his or her own actions. And you can't even begin to ask for more out of young children. I feel angry to think that anybody would even believe that blaming children for a country's misfortunes is a logical explanation.

arckyosuke and I are now "moved in" to the new place. Our furniture is still not here yet, but we both love the new place--so do Snowdrop and Aster, who are happily singing away in the living room. ♥

The neighborhood we live in right now is pretty good. We went to the Walmart on Florin yesterday, which was about 15 minutes from here and...it wasn't some place anyone would like to hang around alone at night. ^^; Sacramento has these regions that seem to have clear divisions.

Anyway, it's off to another day of shopping for new house accessories.

This was the 3rd year I went to Fanime, and though not one of the better years, it wasn't a bad experience all together. jaina_torsec: it was pleasure to go to Fanime with you this year. Hopefully we'll be able to enjoy ourselves more fully at AX this year.

1. The registration line was hell this year. Regrettably, I did not pre-reg this year, and on Saturday, arckyosuke, jaina_torsec, and I waited for more than 3 hours in line. We arrived before lunch time (around 11:30 am), and finally got into the convention after 2 pm. I have to thank shinjixikari for getting chicken sandwiches for us while we waited in line, or else I would have starved. My back was killing me throughout the day.

2. shinjixikari had the most awesome costume this year. One of the most awesome--he was dressed as Hard Gay. I'd never seen so many people stalking tailing him, and when he walked through the convention, it was like the red sea parting for Moses.

3. There were a lot of cosplayers this year, and I'm sure everybody knew about the Gladiators (or was that cosplayers from 300)? I admit, their presence really stirred up the convention. :p I regret not being able to take a photo of a Fay and Sakura cosplayer while waiting in line; I should have ran out of line and tackled them before they went out of sight for the rest of the convention. However, I DID manage to get the Burger King. >D

4. It was a pleasure and immense inspiration to see Jo Chen at the convention. I also got an autograph on one of her prints. Somehow, after the convention, I've become inspired once more to work on some of my projects again. I've decided I'm not going to give up on writing or illustrating stories. That might have lain dormant when I lacked any kind of new inspiration, but I've recently got some ideas again.

I'll always understand that nothing I do is completely original. As long as I can derive satisfaction from doing something, I'll feel like I haven't wasted my time. I miss the days where I felt incredibly inspired with a story, drafting scripts, sketching a character design, or something or another. I probably will not pick up projects like Dark Pride once again, but some of the stories that fed into my projects will be related to the ones I'll be working on. I'll make another post on some ideas I've been working on (mentally), and have decided to pursue. It's time celerity had another update.

Perhaps some of you have already read about how 2 "nice" middle-class girls fell from grace, became strippers, and were arrested for robbing a bank. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been reported the same way if it were two black girls instead.

This is an mp4 file, and it's much clearer this time.

I finally managed to record Aster's talking directly from the computer. He seems to know when I'm trying to record him, and tends to fall silent. I hid a mic behind my laptop and put him right next to it. The recording is about 3 minutes long. I wanted to cut out the silence in the beginning and my talking, but I don't have a way of converting the mp4 file into a wav for editing, so I'm just going to leave it as it is. You can use QuickTime to play the file. The first minute is going to be silence, me talking to him, and him trying to run around on my keyboard. He starts to use his talking voice around 1:20. After that, he basically dominates the show for the rest of the clip, and I just say "Good Aster" and parrot some of his words.

http://download.yousendit.com/A500DB6E2311661A

He's finally mastered how to say "Aster". XD It's funny how he started saying "Snowdrop" before he said "Aster".

Your Personality is Very Rare (INFP)

Your personality type is dreamy, romantic, elegant, and expressive.

Only about 5% of all people have your personality, including 6% of all women and 4% of all men
You are Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Perceiving.

Yep, that looks about right. Last time I took a Meyers-Briggs Test, I was INFP.

arckyosuke got me the Immuno Biology book (6th edition with the pink cover) for Valentine's Day, and I've been reading it since Sunday and covered about 2 chapters. It's one of the best textbooks I've ever had. It's got very CUTE cartoons illustrating the cells and the actions of the enzymes and receptors, and it's very easy and clear to read. It goes into enough detail, but not so much detail that you lose sight of the big picture. I like how it always introduces the bigger picture before going into detail. I wouldn't have understood the complement system or the TOLL pathway normally, just reading it on my own.

I remember this lecture I had last quarter that was supposed to give us a general idea of immunology. I was so confused afterwards. I had difficulty figuring out what were the difference between the functions of dendritic cells and macrophages. Janeway's latest book had everything presented clearly, and in the first chapter alone, reading it clarified everything that had been confusing from that lecture. This text does an excellent job in showing how every part of the immune system ties together. I definitely recommend this textbook for anybody who wants an introduction to Immunology.

Most of the songs this time are going to be classical/vocal, and hopefully, stuff you don't have (because that would be the point of sharing music, right?). I recommend opening the links in another window because they are uploaded via sendspace.

[Edit]: Yousendit links have also been added. Please let me know if any of the links don't work for you.

Walking in the Air by Liam O'Kane. (3.7 MB) | Yousendit
This is one of the best versions (if not the best version) of the beautiful piece composed by Howard Blake in the classic 1982 childrens' cartoon, The Snowman. It's unfortunate that the most popular version on YouTube appears to be the one by Nightwish *cringe*. Liam O'Kane was a former chorister from St. Phillip's Boys' Choir (now known as Libera), and his light airy voice is just perfect for this song.

I Dreamed a Dream by Hayley Westenra. (8.6 MB) | Yousendit
Hayley Westenra is a member of Celtic Woman, and a classical/pop singer from New Zealand. Even though some people say that Westenra's voice isn't deep enough to sing as Fantine, this is still one of my favorite versions of the song because of the clarity of her voice. There is a version of her live performance on YouTube.

Ave Maria (Gounod on Bach) by Radu Marian. (2.8 MB) | Yousendit
This one is kind of an odd clip. Marian, a Romanian singer, is probably the closest modern example to what a classical castrato would sound like. I could not find a version of the same song done by famous soprano performers on YouTube, but you can compare his singing with that of Cecilia Bartoli (soprano) and Andreas Scholl (countertenor).

The Last Unicorn by Declan Galbraith. (4.7 MB) | Yousendit
The original version of this song was by the group America, but something about the way Galbraith sings this songs seems to fit the feeling of the 1982 Japanese anime/cartoon. Declan Galbraith is a young Irish/Scottish singer who became quite famous when he was 9.

I feel kind of silly admitting this, but I'm happy after receiving my credit report and finding out I have an excellent credit score. There are so many variables in life one can't control; there are too many things that life dumps and one is forced to cope with it. When I feel the satisfaction of managing my finances appropriately despite life's craziness, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. It's one thing I kept in good control, and it's something I feel happy about.

I will try to refrain from any shiny comments, but Bush is honestly comparing himself to Truman? Give me a break. Truman formed NATO and consulted with foreign policy experts while Bush is known for NOT listening to people. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

And speaking of politics, Sen. Biden's famous remark about Obama deserves a headdesk. There's this other really funny political cartoon in Newsweek of a couple in front of a TV showing Bidden talking (with a foot in his mouth) remarking, "I'm voting Biden. How many candidates can get their foot stuck in their mouth and keep talking..."

Harry Potter fans will probably also know that Daniel Radcliffe is participating in this play called Equus...where he is a nude horseback rider. Yeah. No comment.

Classes have started at Ohlone, and things are alright so far. It's interesting to have Dr. JB for an instructor again. He totally remembers who I am. He's probably even thinking, "Okay, when is she planning to LEAVE this place?" XD

I talked to him during Biotech lab, and he said that my UCDMC internship can count for course credit. So I'm pretty happy about this. I just have to fill out a form and turn it in to the office. And 2-3 months from now, I can give an evaluation form to Dr. M, who will basically evaluate my performance throughout the time, and I will get a grade based on the evaluation.

Not much else has been happening. arckyosuke and I have started to watch Arrested Development and Six Feet Under. Both are really good shows so far. And iconoclastiac has gotten me into listening to Mae. I don't know exactly what it is--it's probably the ambient guitar, but I really like their music. Oh, and the vocals are NOT annoying, which is usually the case with most guy singers/bands.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of English music. It's mostly been Libera, Enya, Billy Gilman, LeAnn Rimes, and now Mae.

I've been doing some preparation for tomorrow, and arckyosuke helped me book a hotel near the hospital. I hope I don't get lost like crazy this time. ^^

+++++

Totally random, but I recently heard about Els Van Doren who fell to her death, because her parachute was sabatoged by her best friend and colleague. I guess it means that you don't want to get on the bad side of your coworkers, especially if you're a sky diver.

Just a heads-up to say that I will start working in Dr. M's lab in the UCDMC this Saturday. He's so nice; he wanted to help me pay for gas money by letting me tutor his daughter math for a couple of hours before/after work. Also, parking issues have been taken care of, so I don't have to pay for parking. And shinjixikari kindly lent me his place to crash at on Saturdays, for now =). There will still be paperwork to finish and a hospital orientation to attend, but that can be put off until I start working with the animals.

That means, this semester, I'll have to juggle the internship along with classes. But I'm happy--it's better than bumming around.

I managed to get a couple soundfiles of Aster's talking. It's not very clear because it was a second-hand recording. Also, his voice is really funky, so it will take some getting used to.

Aster chirps and sings happily, and then he says Snowdrop:
